The Arabian Sea was glassy calm, the stars reflected on its surface like scattered diamonds. Lieutenant Sara Chen of the US Navy guided her destroyer through the night, the sonar silent, the radar clear. Then the singing began.

It was faint at first, a melody carried on the wind, beautiful and sad. Sara ordered all hands to report. No one was singing. The sound seemed to come from the water itself.

"It's a siren," her ensign joked.

Sara didn't laugh. The song was growing louder, pulling at her. She felt an overwhelming urge to steer the ship toward the source.

"All hands, brace for impact," she ordered.

The destroyer lurched. A woman stood on the water before them, her hair dark, her dress silver. She was not standing on a rock or a boat. She was standing on the sea.

"I am the guardian of the deep," she said. "A time rift is opening beneath your ship. If you stay, you will be pulled into the future."

Sara gripped the rail. "Can we escape?"

"Yes. But you must leave now. Full speed ahead."

Sara hesitated. "What about you?"

"I will seal the rift. But I will be lost-pulled into the void, perhaps to another time, perhaps to another world."

"We can't leave you," Sara said.

The woman smiled. "I have done this before. I will do it again. Go."

Sara gave the order. The destroyer surged forward, cutting through the water. Behind them, the sea glowed blue, then went dark. The woman was gone.

Sara never forgot her. She returned to the same coordinates every year, dropping flowers into the water.

"Thank you," she whispered.

And sometimes, just sometimes, she thought she heard a melody carried on the wind-soft, beautiful, sad-a reminder that even in the vastness of the sea, there are guardians who protect us, even at the cost of themselves.

She never heard the siren's call again. But she listened for it, always.

And she hoped that somewhere, in some time, the guardian was safe, still watching over the deep.
